Which one fits depends on how much you want to own, how large your catalog is, and who pays for the AI.

Written and maintained by the LATW team. It changes what happens when you stop paying.

Translate a small sample first: ten products, one category, one CMS page. Most problems (broken HTML, mangled brand names, too-long meta titles) show up there.

Check friendly URLs, meta fields and hreflang after translating. A translated description with an untranslated URL is half a job.

Plan for updates. Every new product or edited description needs a translation pass, or your languages drift apart.

What do you actually need to translate?

A PrestaShop store has more text than the product pages. Before you pick a tool, list what has to exist in every language:

Catalog content: products (name, short and long description, meta title, meta description, friendly URL), categories, attributes and values, features, manufacturers.

CMS content: pages such as shipping, returns and terms, plus blog or news modules.

Interface strings: theme and module text, and email templates.

Most «AI translation for PrestaShop» tools focus on the first two groups. Interface strings often have community language packs already, so check those before you spend AI budget on them. If you want a walk-through of the module categories on the market, see our guide to PrestaShop translation module types.

The three approaches compared

Proxy / live translation

API-key module

Managed cloud translation

How it works

Pages are translated on the fly by an external service and served under language URLs

A module in the back office sends content to an AI provider you connect

A cloud service translates in the background and writes the result into your store

Who pays the AI

Included in the vendor subscription (plan limits apply)

You, directly to the AI provider, plus the module licence

Credits, or your own AI key

Where translations live

Typically on the vendor’s side

In your store (check the module docs)

In your store database

Best for

Fast launch with little setup

One store, you want control of the model and the bill

Large catalogs, several stores, agencies

Watch out for

Subscription never ends; leaving means losing the translated layer

Large batches may hit PHP timeouts on your server; you manage keys

Another account to manage

Proxy-style services

Linguise is one well-known example, and it publishes a PrestaShop installation guide. It sits between visitors and your store and translates what is served. Setup is quick, and you do not touch the catalog. The trade-off is the usual one for hosted layers: the translated version depends on the subscription, and hosted plans are typically tiered by usage. Linguise’s plans change, so check its pricing page before you decide.

API-key modules

Webkul’s AI Locale Translator is a representative example. As of October 2026 the listing shows $59.00 for a single-application licence and supports PrestaShop 1.7, 8 and 9. It connects to providers such as OpenAI, Google Gemini and Anthropic through an API key, and it covers many content types, including products, categories, pages, attributes and features. The listing does not say whether the price is one-time or recurring, so confirm that before buying. Your AI usage is billed by the provider on top.

This route is good when you want to pick the model yourself and your catalog is modest. The cost of this route depends on tokens, and our batch API cost guide explains why large jobs are cheaper when run as batches.

Managed cloud translation

This is the model behind LATW Cloud. You install the free LATW Cloud module in PrestaShop, connect the store, choose languages and a quality class, and the translation runs on LATW’s servers while you do something else. The result is saved in your store as normal translated content, with translated URLs, hreflang and sitemaps handled natively. The jobs run off your server, so big catalogs do not depend on your PHP limits.

Where it fits: bulk catalog translation, keeping the translations in your own store, and agencies that want one account for many client sites. See how to translate client sites from one account for the agency workflow.

Where it does not: if you want a live visual editor on the front end, or a human review workflow with assigned translators, a different tool fits better.

A step-by-step workflow that works with any approach

1. Add the languages in the Back Office

Under International, add the languages and set up the localization for each country you sell to. Decide your URL scheme now (a language prefix such as
/de/
is the usual choice), because changing it later breaks indexed links. Friendly URLs need URL rewriting on your server, as described in the PrestaShop docs.

2. Define scope and priorities

Translate in this order: top-selling products and categories, shipping and returns pages, then the long tail. A store with 5,000 products does not need all of them live in a new language on day one. Start where the revenue is.

3. Prepare a glossary

List brand names, product-line names, size and material terms, and words that must stay untranslated. Without this, the AI will «helpfully» translate your brand’s collection names. Put the rules into the glossary or prompt, if the tool allows it; support varies, so test it on your sample. Guidance on tone, glossary and prompts is in our AI translation workflow article.

4. Pick the model by content type

Product descriptions with technical details deserve a stronger model than short category titles. Our comparison of DeepL vs ChatGPT for website translation helps if you are choosing between engine types.

5. Translate a sample and review it

Pick ten products that cover your messiest cases: one with a long HTML description, one with many attributes, one with combinations, one with a table. Look at the output on the front end, not only in the back office. A native speaker, even a colleague, spots tone problems quickly. If you want a method for judging output, see how to evaluate AI translation quality.

6. Run the full catalog

Only after the sample looks right. Check the estimated cost first. With your own key, estimate tokens from your word count and your provider’s rates; with Credits-based services, use the estimate the tool shows.

7. Check SEO fields and hreflang

For each language, verify:

Friendly URLs are translated, unique and free of leftover source-language words. In PrestaShop the friendly URL is a per-language field on each product (SEO tab) and category, and CMS pages are managed under Shop Parameters > Traffic & SEO (PrestaShop docs: SEO and URLs). For example, an English slug
waterproof-hiking-jacket
should become something like
wasserdichte-wanderjacke
in German, not stay as the English words.

Meta titles fit a normal display length (titles much longer than about 60 characters are often truncated in search results). Translations into German or Finnish often run longer than English, so check them.

Meta descriptions exist; empty ones fall back to nothing useful.

hreflang tags point to the right alternates, including a link back from each page, which is what Google’s documentation on localized versions requires (each version must reference the others). Our guide to translating a website for international SEO covers URLs, hreflang and sitemaps in detail.

Category and product URLs return the correct page, not a redirect loop to the default language.

8. Plan re-translation

Stores change daily. Decide who triggers a new translation when a product is added or a description is edited, and how often. Stale translations are a common long-term issue, because the initial run is a one-off while edits never stop.

What usually goes wrong

HTML in descriptions. Product descriptions often hold tags, inline styles and sometimes shortcode-like placeholders from modules. A weak workflow translates the tags or drops closing elements. Look at the page source on your sample products, not only the rendered text. When you translate through LATW Cloud’s MCP connection with your own AI agent, each translation is checked for HTML, placeholders and links before it is saved. Whatever tool you use, test this on your sample.

Placeholders and variables. Strings such as
%s
,
{name}
or
:count
must survive unchanged. Check order confirmation emails and theme strings after translating.

Attributes and combinations. «Size: M» and «Color: Red» have to match across all combinations. If the attribute name is translated one way in the filter and another in the product page, shoppers get confused. Use the glossary and translate attributes as their own pass.

Link rewriting. Internal links inside descriptions point to the source-language page unless they are rewritten. Search your sample for hard-coded URLs.

Stale translations. Edited the English text last week? The French one still says the old thing. Build the re-translation step into your process.

Sensitive text. Legal, medical and safety wording should be reviewed by someone qualified in that field, whatever tool produced the draft.

What does it cost?

There are three cost models:

Subscription (proxy services): predictable monthly cost, usually limited by words or page views.

Licence plus tokens (API-key modules): a licence fee (for example the $59 Webkul listing noted above, as of October 2026) plus whatever your AI provider bills for usage.

Usage-based (cloud with Credits): you pay per word translated, and you see the estimate before the job.

For LATW Cloud, the plans below were checked on 29 October 2026 on latw.ai/cloud and may change:

Plan

Price

Sites

Credits discount

Pay as you go

$0

1

none

Solo

$9/month ($90/year)

1

20%

Startup

$25/month ($250/year)

up to 5

30%

Agency

$79/month ($790/year)

up to 30

40%

You do not need a plan to start. Paid plans also let you use your own AI key, in which case LATW adds no usage fee and you pay your provider. Per-word rates differ by quality class, so use the estimate in the app for your actual catalog. What hurts SEO is thin or untranslated pages, wrong hreflang, and duplicate URLs. Translate titles, descriptions and URLs, and verify hreflang as described above.

Can I translate only some products?

Yes.
